Sweeney Todd-The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

To emphasize how good it is, my sister, she NEVER watch musical, despite my collection of musicals dvd. I rewatch this movie at home and urged her to watch. To my surprise, she finished the movie by herself the next day!

Hon Hoong, watched it and claimed its interesting, too!

Depps( Sweeney Todd, Mr T) is a barber who, languished for 15years, being set up by judge (rickman) in order to get his lovely wife. He stayed with Mrs Lovett, a pie shop owner whom gets 'fresh supply" from Mr T. As Mr T seek ways to murder the judge, his friend, a young sailor Anthony(Bower) happens to fall in love with his daughther Johanne(Jayne Wisner). Mr T then carries out his horrid plan.....

"Sweeney Todd" is a musical written by American lyrist and musician Stephen Sondheim. But, Tim Burton version is somewhat more vibrant, well, in his unique ghoul way. Burton's sensibility has sucessfully created a dark feeling in Victorian-era London, with sepia tone for nearly the whole movie except the brighter tone in Sweeney's past memories and Mrs Lovett's hopeful future.

Depp is proven a talented and determine actor.He gives the revenge-seeking maniac Mr T a glimpse of souful side, the hidden side that been blinded by rage. Although he cant sing very well, qoute Depp " I had never sung a note before Sweeney Todd", he has managed all the song with a pop/rock singing style, which suited his vocal. I have to say that his interpretation is impressive and even passionate!

Mr Sondheim theater scores for 'Sweeney todd" is colourful, filled with melodic lines, witty lyrics and moving beats. Helena Bonham ( Mrs Lovett) has dealed with the song and charaters brilliantly. Her husky ,bitter voice brings out the yearning and longing in her heart, for love from Mr T.

Not to forget, Toby( Ed Sanders) , Mrs Lovette's assistant. My, this boy singing is THE BEST in the movie. His bright, round, operatte voice takes my breath away. Voice of an angel!

Blood that spray out like water out of hose, gothic setting with wonderous music-a glorious nightmare.
